People often ask me what kind of company Ichiba is. “Ichiba” also means “market” in Japanese, so some people think we must be a fresh food market or something. They’re amazed when I tell them that we’re a 53-year-old company that began as an abacus shop.
From our early days making and selling abacuses, we have constantly run our business flexibly, watching people’s needs change with the times and finding a way to meet them. This saw us move from abacuses to wooden doorway curtains (noren), and then to home accessories and stylish furniture. Our ability to change with the times has made us a much-loved company to this day.
We bring an inexhaustible curiosity to our furniture design, and a constant desire to improve. We are always asking ourselves what we can do to improve your daily lives. In recent years, we have been working to make a difference to the next generation’s study experience, with developments such as our “smart chairs”. And there’s more to come – watch this space!
